In the late 1980s, the land in the municipality of Benahavís that belonged to Adnan Khashoggi, which included hunting grounds and a mansion, was seized and put up for auction. It was bought by an investment group, which started the project that has come to be known as La Zagaleta.
Initially, the project was based on a large number of properties. But this idea was discarded in favour of a development that combined a low building density with a high level of quality and design. This eventually became a limited number of properties distributed across the 900 ha that make up the area.
Properties in La Zagaleta have to comply with a series of requirements. They mustn’t be taller than two stories, the roof has to be made of Arabic tiles, and the property can’t have a tennis court, for instance.
What’s more, to become an owner in this exclusive community, value is placed on the candidate’s discretion, among other aspects.
Owning a villa in La Zagaleta involves costly maintenance and high owners’ association contributions, owing to the quality and quantity of services available there. These include surveillance of the entire precinct, care and maintenance of the large driveways and extensive communal areas, individual maintenance services for the gardens and swimming pools on each property, and periodic inspections.
The urbanization has two golf courses, including a pitch and putt, driving range, golf academy, clubhouse, swimming pool, tennis court and shop. There is an equestrian centre, with pure-bred Arabian and Spanish horses, Welsh ponies and Falabella miniature horses for little ones, with facilities like changing rooms and lounges. The main clubhouse for the urbanization is located in Khashoggi’s former residence. It includes a restaurant, lounge, tennis and paddle courts, swimming-pool area and heliport.
Besides all that, La Zagaleta offers owners customised services, including private transport, helicopter, luxury cars, yachts, private chef, catering, personal shopper, and a complete range of medical and administrative services.
Most of the mansions have been built on plots of between 3,000 and 10,000 m². They are home to majestic villas and immense garages, with capacity for numerous vehicles. There are driveways with gardens and roundabouts worthy of royalty, basements hosting gyms, saunas, cinemas and wine cellars, and countless luxurious details in the décor and furnishings. And don’t forget the marvellous panoramic views of the African coast, Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea, all designed to meet the high expectations of the owners of these properties.
Construction style has to be harmonious with the setting, where contemporary, avant-garde, rustic and classic properties coexist. Building work is always subject to controls, as a way to avoid the harmony being broken.
At Benarroch Real Estate, we can help you select your house in La Zagaleta.
