With the rise of mass tourism in the 1960s, the first golf clubs began to be created on the Costa del Sol of Malaga. Currently there are about 40 golf courses on the Costa del Sol, of which we highlight the following in Marbella, Benahavís and Estepona Este, which is the area we are concerned with.
Focusing on the area between Marbella East and Estepona East and including Benahavis, we made a tour of the golf clubs located in this area listing their main characteristics, as well as the urban structure that surrounds them.
On the eastern edge of the municipality of Marbella, Cabopino Golf Marbella is a course created in 2001 that consists of 18 holes, suitable for both high handicap and more experienced players. The club has a golf school. Cabopino Golf Marbella is located in an area where the construction typology consists of residential apartments, townhouses and villas.
In Elviria, Santa Maria Golf Club is an 18-hole course designed by Antonio Garcia Garrido situated next to leafy pine and oak woods and with wonderful sea views. Its clubhouse is a magnificent 19th century Andalusian farmhouse surrounded by beautiful gardens. In the surroundings of the countryside there is a proliferation of apartment buildings, townhouses and individual villas.
Designed by Robert Trent Jones and located five minutes from the centre of Marbella, Marbella Golf Country Club has 18 holes and a clubhouse with restaurant, event rooms, golf shop, academy all surrounded by olive groves and wonderful sea views.
One of the best courses in the eastern part of Marbella is Santa Clara Golf Marbella, designed by Enrique Canales Busquet with 18 holes and par 71, located a few minutes from the city. It is an elegant course in a setting populated by magnificent residential complexes of luxury villas and apartments.
The first course we find leaving Marbella towards the East is Rio Real Golf and Hotel, designed by Javier Arana and inaugurated in 1965 with 18 holes par 72, suitable for all types of players. The course runs along the course of the Rio Real until it flows into the Mediterranean. In the heart of the course is located the boutique hotel and in the surroundings we can find residential apartments, townhouses and individual villas.
In Nueva Andalucía and more specifically in the so-called Golf Valley, there are several courses. Aloha Golf Club, a course with 18 holes and par 72, has a route of 6,293 meters on a wavy land and also designed by Javier Arana as much its route as its landscaping.
Another emblematic course in Nueva Andalucía is the Real Club de Golf Las Brisas, designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1968 with 18 holes and later rebuilt by Kyle Phillips. It has among its facilities and services a golf shop, bar, restaurant, rooms for events and sauna.
Also designed by Robert Trent Jones, Los Naranjos Golf Club is an 18-hole, par 72 course with wide fairways lined with numerous orange trees from which it takes its name. Its clubhouse has a specialist shop and restaurant.
A few minutes from San Pedro Alcántara we find the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina which has two courses with 18 holes and a third with 9, as well as the driving range. Guadalmina Sur is the first of the courses, inaugurated in 1959 and renovated in 2002.
Guadalmina Norte was designed by Folco Nardi with a larger surface area, more undulations of the terrain, more vegetation and obstacles. It also offers a cafeteria, swimming pool and tennis and paddle tennis courts.
Passing already to the municipal term of Benahavis, to the north of the Valley of the Golf is located La Quinta Golf and Country Club designed by Manuel Piñero and Antonio García Garrido, a comfortable field, but as well with certain difficulty by its obstacles and falls in the greens. The club has an academy.
Another of the courses located in Benahavis is Los Arqueros Golf and Country Club, opened in 1991 and designed by Severiano Ballesteros with 18 holes par 71. It has facilities such as a restaurant, rooms for events, tennis and paddle courts and a driving range.
La Zagaleta Golf Club has two 18-hole courses, Old and New, situated in a location that allows you to enjoy exceptional views of the coast, surrounded by Mediterranean nature, peace and quiet. Both courses are not excessively long, but quite technical. The clubhouse has a restaurant, a social room and a specialist shop.
Situated between small hills in Benahavis, El Higueral Golf is a beautiful 9-hole par 36 course designed by Roderick Segar with beautiful views, lakes and high quality greens.
Composed of three courses, Villa Padierna Golf Club is located in the five star hotel Villa Padierna. The Los Flamingos course has 18 holes par 71 designed by Antonio Garcia Garrido, with wide greens and careful landscaping. Alferini Golf is also an 18-hole par 73 course with four tees each. Finally, Tramores Golf, with 18 holes par 65. It has an academy.
In the area of Estepona Este and located a short distance from each other, are Atalaya Golf and Country Club, El Paraiso Golf Club and El Campanario Golf and Country House.
Has two 18-hole courses, Old Course and New Course, designed by Bernard von Limburger and Paul Krings respectively. Atalaya Golf and Country Club has one of the largest driving ranges in Spain, golf lessons and the Atalaya Park hotel with a varied offer of activities and sports.
El Paraíso Golf Club is an 18-hole course designed by Gary Player and Kirby taking advantage of the slopes of a hill, with its clubhouse located in the centre equipped with various services and restaurant.
Finally, El Campanario Golf and Country House is a 9-hole course ideal for practicing short shots, in a very welcoming environment. It has a clubhouse with a gym, a swimming pool, a spa, a restaurant and a golf school.
